What is Yoga?

The saying yoga is often interpreted as "union" or even a technique of discipline from the Sanskrit word "yuj" (to yoke or bind). Men practitioner is known as a yogi, a lady practitioner, a yogini.

The Postures ....

The contemporary western procedure for yoga just isn't based on any particular belief or religion, however Yoga does has its roots in Hinduism and Brahmanism. Yoga originated by seers or ascetics living primarily from the southern aspects of India. The seers observed nature and lived as close as they could towards the earth, checking out the many elements of nature, the animals and themselves. By observing and emulating different postures and habits with the animal kingdom we were holding in a position to develop grace, strength and wisdom.

It was within these very disciplined lives the practice with the yoga postures were developed. It had been essential to build a number of postures to keep your body lithe and capable to endure very long stretches of stillness when in meditation.

The Writings ....

Brahmanism goes to containing sacred scriptures called "the Vedas". These scriptures contained instructions and incantations. It turned out from the oldest text "Rg-Veda" in the scriptures that the word Yoga first appeared, this is nearly 5000 in years past. The final text called "Atharva-Veda" contains mainly spells for magical rites and health cures several of which use medicinal plants. This text provided an average joe with the spells and incantations to work with of their everyday routine this also practice of "Veda" can nevertheless be seen in the streets of India today.

The Bhagavad-Gita, another ancient focus on spiritual life describes itself like a yoga treatise, even though it uses the word Yoga as being a spiritual means. It was from this literature that Patanjali's "eight limbs of yoga" were developed. Yoga Sutra's are primarily worried about developing the "nature with the mind" and I will explain a greater portion of this within the next section.

The Breadth ....

The vratyas, a group of fertility priests who worshipped Rudra, god of the wind would try to imitate the sound of the wind through their singing. They learned that they may create the sound with the control over their breath via this practice of breath control was formed "Pranayama". Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga.

The Paths ....

The Upanishads, what are sacred revelations of ancient Hinduism developed the 2 disciplines of karma yoga, the way of action and jnana yoga, the path of data. The paths were developed to profit the student liberate from suffering and finally gain enlightenment.

The teaching in the Upanishads differed from that relating to the Vedas. The Vedas demanded external offerings towards the gods in order to have an abundant, happy life. The Upanishads through the practice of Karma yoga centered on the inner sacrifice in the ego to be able to liberate from suffering. Instead of the sacrifice of crops and animals (external) it turned out the sacrifice in the inner ego that would get to be the basic philosophy, thus yoga became referred to as the road to renunciation.
